The Grid

I noticed this article today about "The Grid" which seems to be a big step forward in terms of speed and I wonder if this is linked to Comcasts announcement of 50mb service in the Twin Cities. At $150/month though- what does this hold for the availability of things like this for most people? And how revolutionary would this be to the world? How quick and expensive will it be to build the infrastructure for this? Will it be quickly integrated into the developing world or will the cost be too high?

I read that article also. It seems that for the high speeds and connection to the GRID, a fiber optic line is required. Any deployed/temporary network is probably going to rely on satellite connectivity. So, don't think the GRID will provide any immediate benefit to the end users, but if the ground station is connected to the GRID, that traffic will move much quicker.
Also given that fiber optic requirement, institution may get GRID access, but for most users it will be some time before the fiber infrastructure is in place.
