TIDES published in CHIPS

CHIPS, the Department of the Navy Information Technology Magazine, has published an article on the ways that Haiti earthquake response teams used widespread collaboration to facilitate more effective relief operations. This reflected the leveraging of distributed talent and public-private partnerships that TIDES has long advocated. The article also covers ways in which TIDES helped catalyze knowledge sharing for relief efforts between the U.S. Southern Command and a global community of civilian technologists dedicated to the use of geographic information systems tools in crisis response.

CrisisMappers hosting webcast of 3D GeoTime Analysis of Ushahidi-Haiti Data

Our friends at The International Network of Crisis Mappers (CM*Net) will be hosting monthly webcasts where members can present projects they're involved in and share perspectives and ideas with other CM*Net members.

This Wednesday at 12:00pm EST, Using the Ushahidi-Haiti response dataset and the USGS earthquake event data, they'll be correlating eathquake and response data from a geo-temporal perspective, using GeoTime's 3D Space-Time Viewer.

Election Monitoring in Afghanistan

Attached is an article from the USAID website about how TIDES helped facilitate the quick development of a GIS tool to monitor election violence in Afghanistan during the August 09 elections.

Election Monitoring in Afghanistan

See this story at the USAID website about our efforts on integrating map data to help in disaster and development. Thanks much to our partners who participated at CP Roberts, and then made it happen in Afghanistan.

Quick and Dirty Remote Monitoring.

Building ICT networks is all well and good but maintaining them is key. One of these keys is having a good monitoring system in place. For both rapid deployment networks & more long term ones, one possible solution is a remote centralized monitoring solution. Using a a service like Linode (linode.com) and a ready to use system monitor solution like GroundWork (groundworkopensource.com) along with a VPN it should make it possible to stand up a systems monitoring system in no time flat. While I haven't field tested this particular idea yet, at my current job we use a similar system. It even works over VSAT.

One Laptop Per Child

At many of the TIDES demos, the One Laptop Per Childs (OLPCs), also known as the XO laptop, have been a very popular exhibit. For those who want to learn more about it, here's a great overview

Populating the Infrastructure Database

The purpose of TIDES's infrastructure directory is to provide users with information about infrastructure solutions that may meet their needs; therefore, we want to provide users with the most useful available. Please help us to do this sharing your ideas and comments about what categories and features should be listed for ICT products.
